Benefits of Local Raw Honey
Benefits of Local Honey
Local raw honey offers more than sweetness — it reflects the plants, seasons, and environment where it’s produced. At Exton Bee Company, our honey is harvested from our own Chester County bee yards and minimally processed to preserve the enzymes, pollen, and natural character that make local honey unique.
How Local Honey Is Made
Our honey is 100% natural and a true product of our environment.
-
Worker honey bees collect nectar throughout Chester County from plants, trees, and weeds
-
Bees transform nectar into honey by adding enzymes and reducing moisture content
-
Much of the honey found in “big box” stores is imported from China, Argentina, India, Bulgaria, Viet Nam, Canada, and other countries — often blended and heavily processed
Pollination: How Honey Bees Support Local Agriculture
As bees travel from blossom to blossom in search of nectar, they brush against pollen-bearing parts of flowers and transfer pollen between plants. This process enables pollination.
Crops that rely heavily on honey bee pollination include:
-
Almonds
-
Apples
-
Avocados
-
Blueberries
-
Cantaloupes
-
Cherries
-
Cranberries
-
Cucumbers
-
Sunflowers
-
Watermelon
Honey bees provide both a valuable product and an essential agricultural service to our region.
Honey, Pollen & Everyday Wellness
Honey contains small amounts of pollen and naturally occurring compounds that many people include as part of a healthy diet.
-
Pollen exposure varies by region and season
-
Local honey delivers pollen in very small, natural quantities
-
Some individuals find this gradual exposure helpful as part of their personal wellness routine
Benefits vary by individual. Honey is not a medical treatment.

Honey’s unique composition makes it a naturally antimicrobial substance. It has traditionally been used:
-
For minor burns and scrapes
-
To soothe sore throats
-
As part of basic wound care
Natural Vitamins & Minerals in Honey
Unlike refined sweeteners, honey contains small amounts of naturally occurring nutrients, including:
-
Niacin
-
Riboflavin
-
Pantothenic acid
-
Calcium
-
Copper
-
Iron
-
Magnesium
-
Manganese
-

Honey in Natural Skin & Body Products
Honey is widely used in natural personal care products because it is:
-
A humectant (attracts and retains moisture)
-
Naturally soothing
-
Suitable for sensitive skin
Common uses include:
-
Soaps
-
Lotions and moisturizers
-
Shampoos and conditioners
-
Baby and sensitive-skin products
Cooking & Baking with Honey
When substituting honey for granulated sugar:
-
Replace up to ½ of the sugar with honey
-
Reduce oven temperature by 25°F
-
Reduce other liquids by ¼ cup per cup of honey
-
Add ½ teaspoon baking soda per cup of honey
Because honey has a higher fructose content, less honey is needed to achieve the same sweetness.
